Teacher Training for Private Schools

Sim4Com helps Dawood Public School Teachers become proficient in English.

November 15th, 2008: Sim4Com has rolled-out its newest initiative, an ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR PRIVATE SCHOOL TEACHERS, using an innovative English Literacy software, at the Dawood Public School (DPS). Sabrina Dawood, daughter of the industrial magnate Hussein Dawood and Chief Executive of DPS, has launched this initiative with Sim4Com to help develop English language proficiency of the DPS teachers.

These days, most low-cost private and public schools in the country, are unable to provide competent teachers, especially for subjects like English language. Teachers who have a good command over the English language demand salaries that are far in excess of what these schools can afford to pay. Ironically, the course books that these schools use are in English and the teachers, due to a lack of proficiency in the English language, are unable to fully comprehend the material themselves, nor convey it effectively to their students. The lack of knowledge of the English language has led to a downward spiral in the standard of education of the masses.

Although, most teachers are interested in developing their English language skills, a majority of the language training institutes are unable to deliver, and those that are able to effectively teach English charge such exorbitant fees that most teachers cannot afford.

Sim4Com, realized that there was a gap in the market waiting to filled. By offering a well-structured program, which has made more than a million people literate in English, Sim4Com hopes to offer these schools high-value at a very minimal cost. We charge a fraction of  what most good language training institutes would charge today and are still managing to offer the same, if not a better standard. The reason is that most of the teaching content has already been incorporated into the software and the facilitator of the course simply needs to follow a pre-written teaching guide in order to train and achieve outstanding results.

According a Sim4Com spokesman, “We request the media to give coverage to the DPS ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL TEACHERS in order to motivate the management of other low-cost private and public schools to teach their teachers English. We need the Media’s support to galvanize a silent revolution where, instead of relying on the government to solve Pakistan’s educational deficiencies, the educational institutions themselves come forward to implement initiatives that are aimed towards improving the standard of education in their schools, and slowly move towards a curriculum which is being used by the high-end private schools. We would appreciate it if the media could help us out in getting the message out to the masses.”

Press Conference at the Karachi Press Club

Sim4Com to use Software to train Government School Teachers

April 21st, 2008: A press conference was held to inform the media about an innovative, teacher training program that uses software to train teachers on how to teach English. A project has just been launched in the Hyderabad District, in conjunction with the District Government and the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD).

As part of the District Government's plan to convert government primary schools into English-medium schools, Sim4Com's English training program is being used to help Government Primary School Teachers (PSTs) develop the skills required to teach English to their students.

Teaching English from the primary level is essential for educational reforms in Pakistan. Our masses are at a disadvantage when they apply for higher education or prestigious corporate jobs. Although, the government wants to teach English language from the primary level, most teachers do not have the required skills to teach the language. This presents an opportunity for us to train these teachers, using our tried and tested training software, says Mohammed Ali Millwala, CEO of Sim4Com. His company, has partnered with South Africa's leading adult education and training firm 'Media Works' to teach English to Pakistanis using a state-of-the-art, interactive training software that is being used in many countries around the world.

Sim4Com has been working with some of Pakistan’s largest corporate clients to improve English language training of their employees. Sim4Com’s English teacher training project, the first of its kind in Pakistan, is being facilitated by the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD), as part of an R&D initiative to use international best-practices, technological innovation and local experience to improve the quality of teacher training in Pakistan. An MOU to this effect was signed on the 3rd of March, 2008, between the three parties, and subsequently, training began on the 1st of April, 2008.

Pakistani company uses South African ABET literacy materials

Pakistan company uses South African ABET literacy materials to tackle poor English levels in corporates

A South African solution is being put to good use in Karachi, Pakistan to tackle the global challenge of skills development and training through a partnership formed between Johannesburg based education and training specialists, Media Works and Pakistan company Sim4Com

Sim4Com provides training solutions to companies in Pakistan by identifying suitable, credible training solutions from around the world.  It identified a national need for improved literacy levels in corporates. “Pakistan has similar education and skills development challenges as South Africa.  In addition, whilst English is the dominant language of the corporate world, we have a number of regional languages, which can be problematic, explains Sim4Com CEO, Mohammed Ali Millwala.

Despite the Pakistan government's 1998 to 2010 New National Education Policy which aims to double the literacy rate, Millwala describes the public school system as poor due, in part, to a lack of competent and qualified English teachers, particularly in public school. This, of course results, in the masses not knowing how to speak English  properly, hence our mission to implement a multi-media ABET programme to rectify this situation.

In 2004 Media Works visited Pakistan to assess the training needs identified by Sim4Com, resulting in a two year pilot project.  Using the multimedia literacy materials developed by Media Works, Sim4Com currently services seven mostly larger companies such as United Bank Limited, The Dawood Group, Sui Southern Gas, EFU General and EFU Life.  Nearly 200 learners have participated to date with over 100 completing and receiving certification from an independent ABET assessment agency.

We visited Pakistan twice a year over the past three years, providing not only our materials but also project support to Sim4Com to help them establish a core team to expand their reach in Pakistan.  For Media Works this relationship has reinforced our faith in our educational materials.  A number of other countries face a similar challenge with education and skills development issues and we're excited about the opportunities for our business to expand globally, says Rob Rees, Media Works director.

The successes of the pilot phase will be used to help Sim4Com's expansion plans to grow its panel of trained facilitators in order to reach a larger number of corporate clients in Pakistan.
